Most people in Massachusetts don’t realize that some of our state’s islands are actually accessible by foot. We’ve already covered how to walk to the mysterious Billingsgate Island, but there’s another gorgeous island you can reach without a boat. Here’s everything you need to know about exploring Crowninshield Island.
Crowninshield Island, previously known as Brown’s Island, is a picturesque spot near Marblehead. It’s a small island composed mostly of rocks and grassy areas. It’s a great place to sit back, splash around, and enjoy the weather.
The isle gets its unique name from DuPont Crowninshield, the local resident who donated the island to the Trustees in 1955. However, the coolest thing about this island is that you can actually reach it just by walking across the water.
When the tide is low, visitors can embark on a 30 minutes walk across a dry channel from the mainland to the island. Once you’re on the island, you can enjoy the small sandy beach, wander across a beautiful open field, and explore a small woodland.
You’ll also have the chance to watch migrating birds rest and feed along the show, as well as tackle the short loop trail that winds past rocky outcroppings with an amazing view of the harbor and 17th-century Fort Sewall. For maximum time on the island, you should arrive one hour before dead low tide and leave by one hour after.
Crowninshield Island is ideal for families and anyone looking to get away from the world for an afternoon. Click here for more information about Crowninshield Island and to find the island on a map. Be sure to check tide information before venturing out to the island.
