Beautiful days in Massachusetts call for time spent outdoors. One of my favorite ways to enjoy some nature is to pack up the family and hit the hiking trails. I typically choose a relatively short, easy walk, but every once in a while, the adrenaline starts pumping, and I go for a more challenging trail. When I'm done, I always leave tired but also depart with a great sense of accomplishment. If you have hiked and enjoyed trails like the Grace A. Robson Sanctuary Trail near Westfield and the Stony Ledge Trail in Lanesborough, you should head to the town of Lenox and check out the Overbrook Trail and Trail of the Ledges.

The Overbrook Trail and Trail of the Ledges is one of four hikes in the Pleasant Valley Sanctuary trail systems, which is owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

This 2.6-mile loop trail is considered to be the most challenging of the four. The hike has an elevation gain of 850 feet and takes about two hours to complete.

When you reach the summit of Lenox Mountain, you are awarded with breathtaking views.

On a clear day, you might even see Mount Greylock and the Catskill Mountains.

The hike is rugged, yet very peaceful and typically not crowded.

You will encounter brooks, small waterfalls, foliage, and beautiful wildflowers along the way.

You may even see a beaver, salamander, or snake!

Beware, the trail gets steep in certain areas.

Also be advised that it can get slippery with fallen leaves as well as ice and snow in the colder months. The best times to visit are during the summer and early autumn. Experienced hikers often pack poles and traction shoes. Mass Audubon advises that visitors should only hike up the Trail of Ledges and take an alternate trail on the way down.

The Pleasant Valley Sanctuary has restrooms and parking on-site.

There is also a play area where children can learn about nature. Please note that there is a small fee for non-members to hike the property and dogs are not allowed on the trails.
