The Little-Known Natural Wonder In Massachusetts That Becomes Even More Enchanting In The Wintertime

Have you ever taken a trip to the beach in the wintertime? While I love visiting the shore in the summer, I find it very calm and relaxing in the colder months. There is just something so wondrous and magical about the snow falling on the water. While most Massachusetts beaches are closed to swimmers and sunbathers this time of year, there is still a lot happening near many shores. Crane Beach on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts is one piece of shore with a whole lot of winter fun!

This year, there are a ton of fun winter activities for all ages to enjoy at the Crane Estate. One popular event that is offered numerous times is a Snowy Owl Prowl. Join in this guided hike across the dunes in search of the beautiful owls that frequent the beachy area. There are also shorter family Owl Prowls for those with young children.

To get the best view of these stunning creatures, be sure to bring a good pair of binoculars.

For more birding adventures, you can also take part in the property’s Cold Weather Feathers event where you will set out in search of Long-Tail ducks, Mergansers, Loons, and other cold-weather birds. You'll learn all about these creatures and how to identify them.

And there are even more fun walks in the woods at Crane. Guided sunset hikes and full moon hikes are favorite ways for individuals and families with young kids to explore the scenic area.

Those who enjoy a snowy workout can take part in snowshoeing. The property has several beautiful trails to enjoy at your leisure. Bring your own snowshoes or rent some to try out.

And for even more snowy adventures, what could be more fun than sledding down this majestic hill? I can't wait to take my kids here when it snows!

After all of that frosty fun, you will probably be a little on the cold side. Fortunately, the property has cozy fire pits that you can visit when you take part in the activities.

Even if you don’t want to participate in a guided activity, a walk around the Crane Estate and Castle Hill is a beautiful retreat any time of the year. The property is particularly scenic when covered with fresh-fallen snow.
