The Can’t-Miss Massachusetts Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
Looking for a great bucket list hiking trail in Massachusetts? The 14-section Robert Frost Trail has hiking for everyone's abilities and interests.
From the Berkshires to the Cape, so many fantastic hiking trails can be found in Massachusetts. While I tend to gravitate toward shorter, easier hikes, a goal of mine is to someday complete a long-distance trail. While I’m not sure if I have the stamina to do this all at once, hiking portions of the trail at separate times seems like a more realistic option for me. If you too have a long-distance hike on your nature bucket list, I have a long trail to tell you about that is perfect for all abilities. The scenic Robert Frost Trail is a hike not to be missed.
The 47-mile Robert Frost Trail is one of the five longest trails in the state. It runs through the Connecticut River Valley, starting in South Hadley and ending in Wendell State Forest. The trail spans 10 communities and is broken down into 14 sections, so there are plenty of spots to get on and off. Be sure to check the maps on AllTrails Plus to find out which portion best suits your interests.
The scenic trail is named for poet Robert Frost who lived in the area for several years during the early-to-mid 1900s. The town of Amherst created the trail in 1982 in honor of the 20th anniversary of Frost’s passing.
The gorgeous Robert Frost Trail is chock-full of natural wonders, including ponds, brooks, rock formations, and mountains. It passes over bridges, runs through farmlands, and traverses neighborhoods. Popular highlights include Mount Orient, the Holyoke Mountain Range, and Mt.Toby. All are beautiful areas to hike and explore and each section offers its own unique natural features. Be prepared to spot wildlife, birds, flowers, and foliage along the way. Hikers of all experience levels will find portions suited to their capabilities.
The trail is not limited to hiking. There are also areas to snowshoe, horseback ride, cross-country ski, and mountain bike. Whether you choose to explore just a portion of the trail or go all out and hike the whole 47 miles, the Robert Frost Trail is sure to have something for you.
Have you ever hiked the Robert Frost Trail? If so, did you complete the trail in its entirety or focus on a specific portion? More information on this beautiful trail can be found at AllTrails. If you are interested in more local long-distance trails, I suggest checking out the New England Scenic Trail and the Massachusetts portion of the Appalachian Trail.
