The 10-Mile Hiking Trail in Massachusetts That Is a Fall Foliage Wonderland

Looking for a great place to get out and view the stunning fall foliage? Head to Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, MA, for a fun hike and gorgeous hues.

The autumnal equinox has taken place and fall has officially begun. You can definitely feel the change in the air here in Massachusetts. As I put on my layers and took a quick walk around the neighborhood last night, I noticed the leaves had already started changing from green to colorful shades of red and yellow. Fall is my favorite time of the year and the sheer beauty of the season is always a magical surprise. I have added several fun autumn activities to my bucket list this year. I’ve already crossed off apple picking at Parlee Farms and may hit up a fall festival in a few weeks. A beautiful fall foliage hike is another activity I would like to accomplish. While there is no shortage of wonderful fall hikes here in the Bay State, I hope to head to Wompatuck State Park in Hingham and check out the gorgeous colors which should soon be at their peak.

Wompatuck State Park is a nature lover's dream. The 3,526-acre park is only a short drive from Boston, so it is perfect for a day trip. The park contains 40 miles of trails and 12 miles of non-motorized roads. There are fabulous hiking and mountain bike trails. You can also camp, boat, and cross-country ski.

The most popular trail within the state park is the Wompatuck State Park Big Loop, which is a 10.7-mile loop trail. You can hike the trail all year long, but it is particularly beautiful this time of year when all the colorful foliage blankets the park.

The hike is considered moderately challenging and should take you about 3.5 hours to complete. Be sure to download a map from the Alltrails+ app as some portions of the trail are not well-marked.

Along with gorgeous scenery, you will be able to view several lovely ponds as well as the Aaron River Reservoir. Be sure to make frequent stops for photo ops with the colorful trees in the background. Several species of birds inhabit the area, so I recommend packing your binoculars and birding guide.

The Wompatuck State Park Big Loop is one of many fantastic trails within the Wompatuck State Park. The park also offers longer, more challenging trails for expert hikers and shorter, easier trails for families. Whatever trail you choose, you are sure to have a fantastic fall adventure.
