Tucked away in Lothian, Maryland, Jug Bay Wetlands is a treasure trove of beauty.

The Sanctuary, which was established in 1985 and is operated today by the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, is situated along the tidal reaches of the iconic Patuxent River.

It's home to an impressive 1,700 acres of landscape comprised of forested wetlands, upland and riparian forests, tidal freshwater marshes, pine and sand barrens, creeks, meadows, and picture-perfect fields.

As you can imagine, it's a haven for a diverse array of wildlife, from plant life to reptiles, fish, and birds.

It's perhaps most noteworthy for being such an important home to birds.

As stated on the site, the "extensive tidal freshwater wetlands support important populations of freshwater marsh bird species such as least bittern, sora, and Virginia rail." If you're fascinated by ornithology, you owe it to yourself to plan a visit.

Moreover, there are over 80 known archaeological sites of interest, meaning that this preserve showcases human history in the most fascinating way. Some of the artifacts date back 11,000 years!

So whether you're fascinated by wildlife, cultural history, or perhaps are just looking to spend a beautiful day on gorgeous, well-maintained trails, we know you'll cherish your time at this lovely preserve.
