Prepare yourselves, Marylanders. Brood X, a particularly gigantic brood of 17-year cicadas, will be making their appearance this spring to summer. Read on to learn more about these beady-eyed creatures and be on the lookout as the weather warms up.
It isn't rare to spot cicadas around your home. There are annual varieties that make an appearance every year, but the periodical cicadas are on a whole other level.
Brood X, also known as The Great Eastern Brood, has the greatest range and concentration of any of the 17-year cicadas. And, they're set to return this year.
This massive brood hasn't been seen since 2004. In late spring to early summer, they'll emerge from their underground homes to molt...
...mate...
...lay eggs, and then die. The newly hatched cicadas will then make their way underground, where they'll stay until it's time to emerge in another 17 years.
You may not even know that the cicadas are starting to emerge until you see your cat batting around a few...
...and birds with their mouths full of the little buggers.
Next thing you know, they're completely covering your trees...
...and eating your children!
Joking! Cicadas are completely harmless.
In fact, some say they're good eats. You can even Google cicada recipes and find a whole bunch of interesting options. Would you dare?!
One thing is for sure -- there's no stopping Brood X from coming, so you better get used to the idea. From most of the east coast to some of the midwest, this is sure to be a spring and summer to remember.
