There are lots of interesting natural features throughout the state of Maine, including little-known caverns like today's feature destination: Moose Cave Gorge. In fact, here at Only In Maine, we find caves in particular to be particularly fun, and we are always up for a below-ground excursion. Or, as is the case with Moose Cave Gorge, an above-ground expedition.
While most of the caves you'll find here are coastal, created over time by pounding surf, there are few places to explore these geological wonders further inland. For a fun day's adventure, take a hike in Grafton Notch to this interesting cave that can be accessed ABOVE the ground. How cool!
Moose Cave is located in Grafton Notch State Park, in Newry.
Moose Cave is so named in honor of the poor, unlucky moose who must have lost her footing and tumbled down into the cave.
The trail to reach the cave is super easy to find.
Access the trail head by following ME Route 26 in Newry heading north for about 11 miles where you'll see signs for Moose Cave on the right.
The trail meanders along a 600-foot long gorge that was carved through the granite by melting glacial water.
The actual Moose Cave is located inside a 45-foot-deep canyon.
This canyon is made of bedrock and water runs along the huge rocks heading into its own cave underneath a granite slab.
The area is full of plants and wildlife, and just beyond the cave there's a mossy garden area.
You'll see lots of people peering over the edge.
But, be careful! It's slippery and you don't want to end up like that one unlucky moose!
Once you've marveled at the cave, continue exploring Grafton Notch State Park for a full fun day!
