You Don’t Want To Miss The Blooms Along The Wild Azalea Trail In Louisiana, The Longest Primitive Trail In The State

One of the many perks about this time of year is being able to be outdoors without that sweltering summer heat beating down on you. Not only are the temperatures perfect, but the bugs are at bay and wildflowers begin to brighten up just about everywhere you look. The Wild Azalea Trail is the perfect hiking trail in Louisiana for anyone looking to surround themselves with beautiful blooms, and they should be popping pretty soon.

Located in the Kisatchie National Forest, the Wild Azalea Trail is the longest primitive trail in the state.

The out-and-back trail clocks in at an impressive 31 miles, but don't worry, you don't have to tackle the entire trail in one day.

The start and end points are located at the Valentine Lake Recreation Area and the Town Hall in Woodsworth, Louisiana.

You’ll probably want to park in the recreation area so that you can enjoy the lake, restrooms, and picnic tables around.

There are signs and blazes along the way.

The trail crosses paths with a few other trails within the forest, so be sure to check your blazes every so often so that you don't end up accidentally wandering onto a different trail.

The tranquility of this trail is unparalleled.

There's a good chance you may not see another soul during your hike.

The trail will lead you through the rolling landscape and underneath towering longleaf pines, with beautiful views along the way.

The trail is great for mountain biking, too!

As you may have guessed, the trail is named for the abundance of wild azaleas that grow along the trail.

And if you time your visit right, you'll get the opportunity to see them.

Typically, azaleas in Louisiana bloom from March to late May.

And the trail is just saturated with them, making for quite the colorful hike!

If you get tired or are simply enjoying your visit so much that you'd rather not leave, bring a tent!

There are many places along the trail where you can pull off and pitch a tent. Just make sure to pack out what you pack in so that this natural oasis can be enjoyed for many years to come.
