We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Oddest Hiking Trail Name in Louisiana

The Tree of Soles Trail in the Kisatchie National Forest certainly has an unusual name.

Louisiana is full of beautiful places to hike. There are trails along the shore, trails on the edges of urban areas, and trails deep in forested areas. Although the weather in Louisiana can be warm and humid at any time of the year, anyone who makes an effort to go out and hike in The Pelican State will surely be rewarded.

Most of the trails in Louisiana have names that describe what hikers might expect when taking a hike on them. For example, one of the most popular trails in the state, the Wild Azalea Trail in the Kisatchie National Forest, has many beautiful wild azaleas along it. The Cane Bayou Trail in Fontainebleau State Park takes hikers along the Cane Bayou, a short but beautiful tributary of Lake Pontchartrain. The French Quarter River Walk is (you guessed it!) a paved trail along the Mississippi River in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Some trails, however, have unusual names instead. We researched and found one that we think will pique your interest. The Tree of Soles Loop Trail is perhaps the oddest-named trail in Louisiana. Why does it have such a strange name? What does it mean? Read on to find out, and to learn more about what you'll find on this intriguing trail in the Kisatchie National Forest.

Are you and your friends or family looking for an easy trail in Louisiana with a surprise along the way? If so, you'll love the Tree of Soles Loop Trail near the town of Melder. This 2.3-mile loop trail is great for hiking. You'll only experience 104 feet of elevation along the way, so this trail is relatively flat for the most part and is enjoyable for people of all ages and levels of experience. The surface is mostly dirt and sand, so you'll want to wear comfortable shoes, and long pants are a good idea, too.

Along the route, you'll see lots of wildflowers. Wild azaleas are common here, but you'll likely see a wide variety of other types of flowers as well. Due to the dampness of the forest, you're also likely to encounter some interesting mushrooms, lichen, and fungi. If you're a mycophile (someone who loves mushrooms), then you'll love this trail!

This trail isn't simply a regular trail through the woods, though. On your hike, you'll see some very interesting things that aren't part of nature, like this clock on a tree. The most interesting thing you'll find on the Tree of Soles Loop Trail is the actual Tree of Soles. It's near the beginning of the trail where the loop portion begins. This tree is how the trail got its name; people come from all over to hang their shoes on it.

You'll find a sign on the tree that explains its purpose. If you hang an old pair of your shoes on the tree, "the burdens of your soul will be lighter." Who doesn't want that? Sounds like a great deal! Although the Tree of Soles has religious significance for some, every hiker can enjoy viewing it on their hike, whether they bring old shoes to hang on it or not.

This trail is also great for horseback riding. Don't be surprised if you encounter some equestrians on your journey. The trail can get narrow in some places, so be sure to step aside to let them pass. Horses have the right of way on all trails.

This hike is beautiful, easy, interesting, and welcoming, and I think you'll love everything about it. You may find it a bit muddy after a rain, but as long as you're prepared for that, this hike is fun anytime. You'll only encounter a few simple obstacles along the way, like fallen trees and small creeks, so this hike is good for the whole family.

The Tree of Soles Loop Trail may have an unusual name, but its namesake tree will ensure that this is a hike that you'll never forget. Have fun, and happy trails to you!
