Chemin-A-Haut State Park In Louisiana Just Turned 89 Years Old And It’s The Perfect Spot For A Day Trip
Out of all of Louisiana's 21 state parks, Chemin-A-Haut State Park holds a special place in my heart. Established in 1935, it's the oldest state park in Louisiana, and it offers nature lovers an endless array of things to do. It's the perfect spot to spend a day, and if you need a little inspiration, here are some of my favorite things to do:
You’ll find Chemin-A-Haut State Park up in the northeast corner of the state.
Not far from the Louisiana/Mississippi state line, this 503-acre state park in Bastrop is a perfect spot to spend a day exploring. Much of the park is sitting on a high bluff that overlooks Bayou Bartholomew, which unlocks even more opportunity.
Most of Louisiana’s State Parks are kid-friendly, but Chemin-A-Haut really takes it to the next level.
In addition to the Kid’s Trail, the youngest of nature lovers can enjoy two playgrounds, a swimming pool, and also a wading pool which is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Chemin-A-Haut also caters to horses, and equestrians love the eight miles of equestrian trails here.
Bring your own horse, of course. On the pedestrian side, there are also close to two miles of hiking trails to explore that are also kid-friendly (and horse free).
There are plenty of picnic tables peppered around the bayou.
Bring some food and enjoy a picnic after hitting the hiking trails!
Out of all of the trails at this state park, I'd recommend the paddle trail the most.
You can bring your own kayak/canoe or rent a canoe from the park.
You can paddle down Bayou Bartholomew to see the Castle Tree, one of the oldest living trees in the country.
This beast clocks in with a diameter of 20 feet and is estimated to be 800-1,000 years old!
Once you spend a day here, you'll start planning a weekend getaway.
Chemin-A-Haut State Park offers 10+ different cabins plus several RV slots as well as primitive campsites.
