My Favorite Park in Louisiana Is a Little-Known Oasis for Birding

If you love birds, then there are a wide variety of them waiting for you at Tickfaw State Park near Springfield, Louisiana.

If you love birds, you'll love spending time at Tickfaw State Park near Springfield, Louisiana. This swampy paradise is a wonderful place to wander and spot a wide variety of interesting bird species. This little-known Louisiana state park, which was established in 1999 and is on 1,200 acres, had only 37,000 visitors last year.

Tickfaw State Park is close to New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and it's easy to get to from both places. If you want to go camping, there are 14 cabins you can rent, plus 50 campsites, as well as opportunities for picnicking, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and wildlife watching.

You'll find that Tickfaw State Park is amazing! Because of its unique and impressive natural features, it's one of 110 recognized sites in the Louisiana Natural Areas Registry. In this park, visitors will find four different ecosystems: cypress-tupelo swamp, bottomland hardwood forest, mixed pine-hardwood forest, and the Tickfaw River. Thanks to this wide variety of habitats, many species of birds are drawn to this area.

Over one mile of boardwalks makes this park accessible to people who might have difficulty exploring places with natural and uneven ground. Everyone can come here and enjoy the park—and the birds.

The variety of birds found here is vast. The black-bellied whistling duck is a striking resident you'll likely see during your visit, along with anhingas. Anhingas are large birds that often sit with their wings spread to allow them to dry before flying again. Another bird you might spot is the American white ibis, a beautiful wading bird that's easy to spot as it's not very well camouflaged against all the greenery in Tickfaw State Park.

Owls are nocturnal, of course, but if you look carefully, you may be able to find a barred owl asleep high in a tree. And everyone loves seeing pileated woodpeckers throughout the park! Listen for their pecking, follow the sound, and then look for their red heads—they are easy to find this way.

Tickfaw State Park is also full of songbirds, like the yellow-throated warbler. You'll love hearing them sing their love songs to the swamp that surrounds you.

There are lots of other animals to see in this park, too. While visiting, you might encounter deer, foxes, opossums, rabbits, squirrels, beavers, and armadillos. You might even see an American alligator or two. But don't worry, you'll be safe as long as you stay on the boardwalk.

This park is a wonderful place to visit, and you'll love everything about it. Bring your binoculars to spot even more bird species on your hike. Have a great time with the birds at Tickfaw State Park!
