As one of the largest cities in the Sunflower State (and a major metropolitan area of the Midwest), it's understandable that you'd think there isn't too much nature to be found in Wichita, KS. Sure, it's a great city and totally worth a visit, but it's easy to think of it as deserving of attention thanks to its wonderful museums, delicious restaurants, and fun attractions. However, it's actually home to one of the best nature centers in Kansas! The Great Plains Nature Center is a free, indoor-outdoor facility that strives to educate the public on all the ins and outs of Kansas nature. It's home to miles of trails, a few cool critters, and often hosts educational programming that's perfect for the entire family. Check it out:
The Great Plains Nature Center borders Chisholm Creek Park, and both the nature center and park are free to enter.
The park is open all year, and it's a fascinating place to head out for a stroll and see the seasons change!
The buildings here are home to more than 3,500 square feet of exhibits with detailed information about the critters that live in Kansas and the wide variety of ecosystems we have here.
There's also a rotating cast of live native animals that are on display so you can get up close and personal with some of Kansas's most adorable species.
The outdoor area is just as enticing. There are several miles of trails around the nature center, with paved areas...
...amazing pond views...
...and even a few boardwalks!
This is such a beautiful nature center that's the perfect place to temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
