Spot Prairie Dogs Peeking Above Ground On The Prairie Dog Nature Trail In Kansas

Have you ever wanted to spot prairie dogs in their natural habitat, unbothered by zoo walls and city noise? Well, we've got a trail for you!! This short and easy trail has a lot to see if you like wildlife spotting. These little cuties are just here waiting for you to come by and snap a photo or two.

Welcome to a state park many Kansans seem to forget, Prairie Dog State Park. Just by the name, you might be able to guess the main attraction to a place like this.

Out in northwestern Kansas by the Nebraska border, you'll find a small state park named after one of the little creatures that call Kansas home.

In the park, the 1.4-mile loop trail is the best way to get started on your adventure. If you happen to spot some dirt mounds like these, keep an eye out for something popping out from inside.

Do you see that there? A prairie dog! If you're quiet and here at the right time of day, you can find these little guys peeping above the mounds and running between them.

Watching these little guys will probably take up most of your time if you can stay quiet enough to spot them out and about. It might be a short hike, but you can spend a surprising amount of time just watching wildlife if you are interested enough.

Getting a great view of the park, the lake, and the prairie dogs at this Kansas state park makes this a great adventure.

The trail is nice to take year-round, though the prairie dogs are going to be less active during colder months. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leashes at all times. Please make sure to bring everything home that you bring out here, to prevent litter and keep the landscape beautifully natural.
