Just driving through Iowa, you’ll see acres and acres of thriving, beautiful farmland. In fact, Iowa is probably best known throughout the world for its farming industry. One of the most famous dairy farms in the world is actually located right here in Iowa, and they’re the makers of the incredibly delicious Maytag blue cheese. If you haven’t yet, you’ll definitely want to visit.

Located in central Iowa near Newton, Maytag Dairy Farms makes some of the best cheese in the world.

They began producing their special brand of Maytag blue cheese in 1941, from an award-winning line of show cattle that was established in 1919.

The farm adopted a cheese-making process that was developed at Iowa State University, and they still use it today.

It involves a time-consuming process of hand making the cheese in small batches, using fresh sweet milk from Iowa dairy farms.

The cheese is aged and carefully monitored for months in curing caves and is sold when it reaches its peak flavor.

Maytag Dairy Farms typically ages their cheese twice as long as most other blue cheese. That, along with the painstaking small batch process and exceptionally high quality ingredients, is what makes this cheese so special.

The farm has stayed in the family and is now owned and operated by third and fourth generation family members.

In addition to their famous blue cheese, they also offer many other types of cheese of incredibly high quality, like several varieties of cheddar cheese and a La Petite Blue, a soft ripened French style cheese delicately layered with Maytag mold.

When you visit, you can take a walking tour overlooking the farm.
