Pilot Knob Loop is a moderately challenging hike that’s perfect for adventurous beginners and seasoned hikers alike.
Located near Forest City in Pilot Knob State Park, the trail is a little over five miles long and winds through densely forested parkland.
This trail gains about 450 feet in elevation and is on the longer side, so it’s a great option for those days when you have a few hours to spend exploring.
Follow the trail through thick greenery and past pretty spots like a woodland theater and wildflower patches.
The jewel of the trail is the overlook tower. From there, you’ll be able to gaze out over the surrounding countryside and a beautiful lake.
It’s a great spot to stop for a picnic, rest your legs, and snap a few photographs. Hikers who aren’t afraid of heights can check out the view from the top of the tower.

Since this trail is a loop trail, you don’t have to worry about doubling back. Continue on the trail until you’re deposited back where you started.
