This Just Might Be The Most Underrated Hike In All Of Iowa
Brown's Woods in West Des Moines offers a serene hiking experience with moderate trails through a lush forest.
Now that summer's in full swing, we hope that you're getting out in nature and doing some hiking. Here's a little hike you can take that's close to Des Moines...but you'll feel like you're in the middle of the wilderness.
Brown's Woods is a little nature preserve in West Des Moines.
The 486-acre forest of hickory and oak trees was established as a forest preserve in 1972.
You can explore the area on its trail system. The Preparation Loop and Gateway Trails are just a half mile each; incorporate all four trails for a total of 4.4 miles.
The trails are rated as moderate, with a few inclines.
The area is lush and green. Brown's Woods is just a few miles from the International Airport, but you'll feel as though you're far into the wilderness here. It's generally quiet, and not too crowded.
The trails are dirt, and can be slippery after it rains. Wear some good hiking shoes, and bring bug repellant.

Bring your pup along! Dogs are allowed on the trail, as long as they're kept on leash. Please clean up after them to keep the area nice for future hikers.
