What Makes Silver Springs State Park in Florida so Special?
Silver Springs State Park, located at 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd in Silver Springs, is less than 10 miles from Ocala. The park is open from 8 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year, but hours may vary depending on holidays. It's an easy day trip from Orlando for anyone looking to explore Florida's gorgeous natural springs. And if you live in Gainesville, it's less than an hour away. If you enjoy spending time on the water, this state park delivers big for you.
Fun Fact: Silver Springs is considered one of Florida’s first tourist attractions. Back in the late 19th century, visitors traveled here on steamboats just to vacation in the Sunshine State. You can learn more about the park's fascinating history by visiting the on-site museum and education center.
This outdoor haven encompasses an astounding 4,000 acres and is named after the Silver Spring, one of the largest artesian springs in the United States. To give you a little context, an artesian spring results from pressure underground, which brings the water upwards, making it one of the most unique and best state parks in Florida. Paddling, whether in a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard, is very popular here. Don't know how to kayak, but desire to explore the waters? That's no problem! The famous glass-bottom boats are another way to see the beautiful springs.
The Famous Glass-Bottom Boat Experience
Paddling is a wonderful way to explore the park, but the iconic glass-bottom boats are popular as well. In fact, they've been operating since the 1870s, and Silver Springs is the only park that offers this ride. So, you'll be experiencing something that you can't find in any other state park in Florida. Folks travel from far just to see the underwater world on this unique Florida adventure. Rides are 30 or 90 minutes long. For the best experience, I would opt for the extended 90-minute tour for exclusive views of hidden gems in the park, including ancient artifacts and underwater movie sets.
Unlike kayaking, come dressed as you are for this ride. Of course, if you're here in the summer, you'll want to wear light, comfortable clothing, and don't forget your camera. Although the boat is covered, you should consider wearing sunscreen, as you can still be exposed to the elements while at the park. The park's entrance fee does not include the ride on the glass-bottom boat, and it's recommended to make reservations online for the boat tour to guarantee a spot. They book up fast!
Wildlife You Might Spot at Silver Springs
Silver Springs State Park offers the perfect starting point for a relaxing five-mile paddle down the pristine Silver River, where the water is so clear you can see right to the bottom. It really is one of the most popular places to kayak in Florida. A few companies offer single and tandem kayaks, or canoes, for rent on Silver River within Silver Springs State Park.
One such outfit is Discovery Kayak & SUP. No matter your skill level, you can find something for you. If you're an avid kayaker (bring your kayak), the self-guided tour will be your best option. For beginners, I would recommend the guided tours. You'll learn all about the history of the park as you paddle through this breathtaking destination.
One of the main attractions here is the plethora of rhesus macaque monkeys living along the shore. It is so fun to watch them swinging from branch to branch in the trees! Local legend has it that the monkeys were brought to the area in 1939 as part of the filming of the Tarzan movie. The natural elements of the spring-fed Silver River make this the perfect habitat for them (and kind of outdoor zoo experience for visitors too!) It's really cool to see these monkeys in the wild, especially since these adorable creatures aren't native to Florida.
During the heat of the day, you may get a chance to see both alligators and turtles sunning themselves along the shores of the river, perhaps on a fallen tree. One note: Although they may look like fascinating creatures, you should never, EVER, approach an alligator! It's often an unwritten rule in Florida to stay far from our gators. If you see them from your kayak, stay clear and instead snap a quick photo and continue to paddle on by.
The best part about paddling or riding the glass-bottom boat at Silver Springs State Park? You might get lucky and see a manatee (or two) swim past you, visible in the slow-moving, shallow waters. Look for them to surface every few minutes to take a breath. Manatees are very abundant here in the winter months, as their annual ritual is to gather near the warm spring that feeds into the river, the same spot where your kayak trip begins.
Many interesting birds can also be spotted on your journey, including herons, egrets, ibises, and cormorants. If you enjoy wildlife viewing, you won't be disappointed here. There will be plenty to see as you drift peacefully along this tranquil river. Naturally, summer is peak season, and the park will be the most crowded. However, since this is Florida, it's wonderful to visit year-round.
Other Things to Do at Silver Springs State Park
If you have never paddled or ridden the glass-bottom boat on the Silver River, you should consider adding this to your list. Not only will you have close encounters with the wildlife here, but you'll be floating on one of the most unique waterways in the country. Beyond spending time on the water, the park is a great destination for a day trip in Florida or a weekend adventure. You and your entire family can picnic, swim, hike, ride horses, and spend nights camping. You'll find locals and visitors alike who prefer to escape the busy tourist corridors of the state in favor of a truly authentic Florida adventure.
