The thing about Florida in the fall is that it is highly underrated. While most people clamor to the northern parts of the country to see the leaves change, there is a beauty to Florida that many don’t realize even exists. Sure, you won’t be able to see the colors of nature turn a vibrant red or fiery orange, but the temperatures will be in the cool 70s, which makes it the perfect time to go for a ride along this historic Heritage Trail.
The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is not for the faint of heart—and while you may not tackle all 109.2 miles of it in one shot, you can still get a good dose of autumn beauty from at least riding a portion of it.
Bikers take to the Overseas Heritage Trail during the autumn months because of the cool temperatures and crisp air coming off the water.
With over 90 linear miles of paved trail to enjoy, it isn’t just the bikers who get to glimpse the beauty, but also the walkers, hikers, wanderers, bird watchers, and casual strollers.
Really…who wouldn’t be tempted by tackling a bike ride with an autumn ocean breeze accompaniment?
The Key West to Key Largo Heritage Trail follows the route of the Overseas Railroad, which was the original connection between all the Florida Keys islands.
The trail now will take pedestrians and bikers across many of the historic railroad bridges, with stunning panoramic views of the island edges and clear, turquoise blue water.
For those who want to bike the entire way, we recommend some serious planning in advance, because this trail in completion is not for the faint of heart.
No matter which way you decide to tackle it, make sure that you keep your eyes peeled for some of the neighboring wildlife…
…and also make sure to stop and enjoy a bit of the crisp fall Florida air along the way.
Starting from Key Largo and heading south tends to be the more popular option, as bikers can enjoy a cold beer in Key West at the end of the trail.
Nothing will be as rewarding for bikers along the Overseas Heritage Trail than seeing the Mile Marker 0 at the end of the ride.
Ready to plan an epic autumn adventure? You can find out more information about the Keys Overseas Heritage Trail by visiting the Florida State Parks website. Some bridges have been closed due to safety issues after Hurricane Irma, so it is important to check the website for more information about closures.
