Open Since 1929, Bok Tower Gardens Has Delighted Generations of Floridians

Bok Tower Gardens in Florida is a rare gem of natural beauty with a unique history. This nearly century-old attraction is still stunning!

Some of the most beautiful places in Florida are tucked inside those quiet corners of our state. For instance, Bok Tower Gardens is arguably the most breathtaking attraction here, at least in my opinion. The iconic garden is located in Lake Wales, a small city in the heart of Central Florida, about 50 miles from Orlando.

Construction on this stunning hidden gem began back in the 1920s, so it’s also one of the oldest and most impressive places in the Sunshine State. With a unique history dating back almost a century, plus the vibrant beauty of nature as a focus throughout, come see what makes these gardens such a magical place within Florida's history. Nature lovers, photographers, and history buffs, this lovely garden and tower will inspire you in the best way.

Dive Into the History of Bok Tower Gardens

"Make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.” After you visit Bok Tower Gardens, you’ll fully understand what the matriarch of the Bok family meant when she said this. The charming garden in Florida is an impressive attraction that has been delighting state residents for nearly 100 years. This garden and sanctuary is located in Lake Wales and encompasses more than 250 acres of natural beauty.

Construction for the gardens and giant singing tower started back in the 1920s when the editor of Ladies Home Journal, Edward W. Bok, and his wife, Mary Louise Curtis Bok, were spending winters in Florida. The construction aimed to transform the arid, desolate space into “a spot of beauty second to none in the country,” and the family certainly accomplished that.

Of course, the centerpiece of the gardens is the impressive Singing Tower—a 60-bell carillon set over 200 feet tall. History buffs will be delighted to know that when the tower’s construction was finally completed in 1929, Edward and his wife had a dedication ceremony led by President Calvin Coolidge!

Fun Fact: The haven was built on Iron Mountain, one of the highest points in Florida. The hill extends to a whopping 300 feet above sea level, which is quite impressive for a mostly flat state. This means the singing tower rises high above the wide open landscape of Lake Wales and the surrounding area.

Fast-forward almost a century later, and visitors are still able to explore the acres of tropical plants, pines, oaks, palms, camellias, azaleas, ferns, lilies, and so much more. While the interior of the tower isn’t open to the public, there are recitals that take place daily from the 60-bell set. Come spend an afternoon exploring the gardens and seeing just how magical this area has become over the years.

Discover the Magic of the Gardens

Beyond the tower, the gardens is a wonderful destination for a day trip in Florida. Here, you'll find hiking trails surrounded by tropical plants, serene ponds, and historical sites. Visitors can spend the day wandering through winding pathways, admiring the reflective ponds, beautiful plants, and abundant wildlife. Don't be surprised if you run into photographers here; after all, this garden is one of the most beautiful spots in Florida.

I love that there are designated picnic areas where you can sit and soak up the beauty of the gardens. Since visitors can bring outside food in, I would suggest that you pack lunch and a blanket and find a spot to listen to the sounds of nature and the bells as they echo through the charming haven.

History buffs can tour the historic El Retiro mansion, and if you have the little ones with you, they will have lots of fun exploring the Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden. But that's not all. There is a cafe with snacks and treats, and a gift shop where you can buy items to remember your day in this gorgeous garden in Florida.

In a state where theme parks are the norm, it's nice to have this 100-year-old sanctuary that reminds us that the simple things in life are, in fact, the most beautiful. Chances are, after your visit, you'll feel like you've discovered something truly magical in Florida.
