The Iconic Trail in Connecticut Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

Follow this iconic trail in Hamden to the top of Mt. Carmel and some of the best views in Connecticut.

Hiking in Connecticut allows us to see and experience our beautiful state in a way we can’t when just driving by. We’ve got some pretty amazing trails here that promise spectacular views, glimpses of history, and encounters with local wildlife. This iconic trail in Connecticut offers all three, making it a must-add to any outdoor bucket list if you’re up for a bit of a challenge.

All that stands between you and some of the most breathtaking views in Connecticut is the Sleeping Giant Tower Trail. This is a moderately challenging out-and-back path that meanders 3.1 miles through Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden. Although it earns a moderate rating on AllTrails, some hikers consider it easy. How you find it likely depends on your skills and experience. The generally kid-friendly trail welcomes leashed dogs, making for a fun family adventure.

Start your day at Sleeping Giant State Park by parking in the main parking lot at 200 Mt. Carmel Avenue. Parking is free if you have a vehicle that’s registered in Connecticut. Those with out-of-state plates must pay an entrance fee from April 1 through October 31, with weekend rates slightly higher than weekday rates.

Pick up the trailhead to the Sleeping Giant Tower Trail, a wide gravel path, near the parking lot. Be prepared for a climb as the trail has an elevation gain of just shy of 600 feet to the summit of Mt. Carmel and Sleeping Giant Tower. Although considered a gentle climb, the incline and sometimes rocky terrain are the biggest challenges you’ll face along the park’s most popular trail.

Because the trail is so popular, it can get busy. To avoid the crowds, set off earlier in the day. Comfortable, sturdy shoes are recommended to help navigate the sometimes rocky terrain. Plenty of photo-worthy moments await, so don't forget your camera.

The tree-lined path leads past rock formations, patches of wildflowers and mushrooms, and to Sleeping Giant Tower, undeniably the trail's highlight. Built by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, the four-story stone tower boasts 360-degree spellbinding views of the surrounding landscape. Try to hike to the tower on a clear day for views that spread as far as New Haven County and Long Island.

Beyond the Tower Trail, Sleeping Giant State Park offers more than 32 miles of trails that explore the iconic ridge's landscapes. Picnic areas are available for visitors looking to relax and savor the serene surroundings. The park is pet-friendly but requires dogs to remain leashed at all times. Check current trail maps and seasonal updates on the official park website before planning your visit. Find more information, including the current entrance fee for out-of-state visitors, on the official website of Sleeping Giant State Park, or stop by the Facebook page of the Sleeping Giant Park Association.
