The 2-Mile Lazy River In Northern California Where You’ll Find Us All Summer Long

Floating down the Russian River is a quintessential summer activity in Sonoma County. Planning ahead is key to ensure your tubing trip down this lazy river in Northern California is as relaxing as possible.

The Russian River meanders over 100 miles through Sonoma and Mendocino counties, but the sweet spot for floating is around the town of Guerneville.

Our favorite stretch is the 2-mile journey from Steelhead Beach to Sunset Beach in Forestville.

The river’s slow summer flow, averaging about half a mile per hour, makes for a leisurely float. To avoid the late afternoon winds that can push you upstream, aim to start floating by 11 a.m.

If you’re heading out on a weekend, holiday, or particularly hot day, arrive at Steelhead Beach by 10 a.m. at the latest.

To avoid a long walk along busy River Road after your float, consider parking one car at Sunset Beach and another at Steelhead Beach. Alternatively, you can park at El Molino High School and take the Regional Parks River Shuttle, which runs every 30 minutes on summer weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The shuttle costs $5 round trip and is a great option if you arrive after 10 a.m., as parking lots at both beaches fill up quickly.

Tube rentals are conveniently available at Steelhead Beach and can be reserved online in advance, saving you the hassle of bringing your own.

On the river, keeping your belongings dry is crucial. A waterproof dry bag is ideal for securing your keys, phone, and other valuables.

Don’t forget to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, as hours under the sun can lead to dehydration.

Remember, alcohol is dehydrating, so drink even more water if you choose to indulge. Be aware that alcohol consumption is prohibited at Steelhead and Sunset beaches and the Forestville River Access, but you can enjoy a drink during the float.

When you reach the end of your float, please respect the “leave no trace” rule by properly disposing of any garbage.

After your float, explore the area’s charming wineries, tasting rooms, and boutique hotels.

While there are shorter and longer floats to choose from, the 4.5-hour journey from Steelhead to Sunset Beach strikes an ideal balance.
