Visit Northern California’s Most Underrated Redwood Forest. It’s a Stunner!

You will stand among giant redwoods in this underrated forest.

Northern California is known for its massive, breathtaking forests. Home to Redwood National and State Parks, this corner of the state is home to groves of trees that awe and inspire. While many people travel to the popular Redwood National Park in Northern California, there’s another redwood forest that’s lesser known, underrated, and perfect for a day trip — Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve.

If you love spending time in thick, beautiful forests like me, I strongly recommend adding the Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve to your bucket list. Located near the town of Ukiah, this 2,700-acre park is a place of remarkable beauty. Because it is less known and not as popular as many national and state parks in California, it is much easier to find solitude and tranquility while surrounded by stunning redwood giants.

Just like Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP), you will find massive redwood trees throughout this natural reserve. In fact, for a while, a 365-foot redwood tree in Montgomery Woods was believed to be the tallest tree in the world. However, taller trees in nearby RNSP have since been discovered, but you’ll still find plenty of gigantic trees in Montgomery Woods that will amaze you.

The Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve was first established in 1945 by Robert Orr, who donated nine acres to begin the reserve. Today, it is now more than 2,700 acres in size and is a beautiful day trip destination.

The best way to explore this grove of trees is on the Montgomery Grove Trail. This is a family-friendly loop trail that is approximately two miles long. While primarily flat, there are a few steep portions near the trail's beginning and end. However, the grand, majestic trees and beautiful landscape will make every incline worth it.

Bring a picnic lunch on your hike, as you will find picnic sites along your route. If you time your visit just right, you may find that you are all alone, surrounded by these majestic giants. This is self-care at its best.

If you choose to hike the entire trail, you will enjoy views of Montgomery Creek, fern forests, and many redwood groves. Keep in mind that while the trail is well-maintained, it is unpaved and can be difficult for those with mobility challenges. However, there is a picnic area and interpretive panels at the entrance of the natural reserve for everyone to enjoy. It's also worth noting that there is no visitor center.

Camping is not allowed at Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve, and trails can be quite muddy if you visit after a rainy day. Pets are also not allowed on the trails or within the reserve.

The massive redwood trees are one of my favorite natural wonders in California. To me, they are a reminder of nature’s power and beauty. Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve allows you to enjoy these wonders without the crowds. It's a place where you can find peace, solitude, and relaxation.
