The Most Remote Lake In Northern California Is Also The Most Peaceful

One of the best things about Northern California is that it is home to some of the most amazing waterways: coastline, rivers, streams, bays, and California alpine lakes. Among the latter, one of the most remote lakes in Northern California is Lake Genevieve, and the way to get there is also one of the best hiking trails in California.

Lake Genevieve is located about 40 minutes north of South Lake Tahoe.

It is just one of several lakes located in the Desolation Wilderness. Getting there is via a hike along the Meeks Bay Trail. Out-and-back it spans approximately 9.8 miles with spectacular views all around.

The mountains in the Desolation Wilderness here can be seen from all sides of the lake.

The colors change dramatically with the amount of light and sun at any particular time, so there’s always something new to experience. Hikers here say that coming to see the fall foliage is a particularly enchanting time.

Lake Genevieve is spectacular at any time of the year.

Surrounded by those beautiful mountains the lake is not one of the largest in this region, but definitely popular with hiking and backpacking enthusiasts who love being away from the crowds.

These wispy clouds just exude peace and serenity.

Vestiges of old fallen trees pop out of the water at different points, as you can see here in the bottom right of the photo. They almost look like appendages from a creepy movie or ghost town.

Even in winter, the lake is a comfortable place to visit.

The location makes it feel like the lake is a world away, drawing you into its scenic beauty and mystical backdrop.

Birding is also a popular excursion here, due to the wealth of trees.

Words can’t quite describe the feeling here, so you just have to bring your binoculars, get ready for a good hike, and come and experience Lake Genevieve for yourself!
