This State Park In Northern California Is So Little Known, You’ll Practically Have It All To Yourself

Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park offers a secluded and intimate experience with beautiful redwood trees and family-friendly camping.

California is well-known as home to some of the most spectacular redwood tree forests in the world, particularly in the northern part of the state. Although most people are aware of the largest and most visited old-growth forests in The Golden State, there are some that are more off-the-beaten-path. Among them is Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park.

Located approximately 15 miles east of Highway 101 off Highway 36 in Carlotta, CA, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park features some of the state’s most beautiful redwood trees.

One of the benefits of coming here is that it is off-the-beaten-path, which means it will feel like you practically have the entire park to yourself.

Because of the park’s location, and its size, an intimate one square mile, it feels like a world away.

Everywhere you look you’ll encounter these soaring beauties which have been here for decades, if not longer.

For those who enjoy camping, you’ll find 28 sites scattered around the meandering paved loop circling through the campground.

In addition to having the trees in your "backyard" a few of the sites also back up to the Van Duzen River, adding more of a rustic ambiance to your stay.

Because the campground at Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is so small and little-visited, it’s great for families with children.

Here they can ride their bikes without the stress or worry of having to avoid vehicles traipsing through the area.

There are plenty of opportunities to learn more about the history of the forest and area here.

In a throwback to a long-gone era, the park offers fun and educational campfire programs led by seasoned docents who love sharing their knowledge. There is also a Visitor Center where tourists—whether visiting for the day or staying in the campground, can learn about the various wildlife and plants that inhabit the area.

Beautiful, secluded, and historic. This is the vibe you’ll experience at the little-known but no less wonderful Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park.
