The Little Known Hiking Path in San Diego is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

Enjoy some solitude as you bring in the new year on the South Rueda Canyon Trail. This SoCal hike in San Diego has plenty to love.

There is no better way to welcome in the new year than outdoors and here in Southern California, we are blessed with beautiful weather when most of the country is experiencing heavy snow and chilly temperatures. While I love several outdoor activities during the early months of the year, there’s nothing quite like a hike and the South Rueda Canyon Trail in Roadrunner Park in San Diego is certainly one of the best. This trail is lesser-known, typically quiet, and beautiful. It is easily near the top of my favorite first hikes of the year.

Roadrunner Park is a fantastic escape into nature without leaving San Diego. This park, located in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, has many amenities for the entire family including grassy lawns, picnic tables, a children’s play area, and more. It is also where you’ll find the South Rueda Canyon Trail, a family-friendly hike where you can explore the canyon that is tucked away behind the park and neighborhood.

There are many things to love about the South Rueda Canyon Trail. It is an out-and-back hike that is approximately 2.5 miles. It is also lesser known, making it the perfect place to find a little solitude outdoors and in the city.

The path is also easy to follow, although there are some areas where you may find it is a bit overgrown. If you are ever worried about losing your way, you can always use resources like AllTrails+, which allows you to download and utilize trail maps offline.

This trail also has small creeks you will cross, and lovely cacti and vegetation everywhere you look. During the summer months, you’ll want to pay close attention to the ground. It isn’t uncommon to spot a rattlesnake or two near the trail.

I recommend you wear sturdy shoes and take plenty of supplies for your journey. This trail may not be long but there are some rocky areas and a few inclines you will need to conquer. In total, you can expect to climb more than 300 feet in elevation. If you need to stop and take a break — do it. The scenery surrounding you will make every stop worth it.

You’ll walk through portions of this trail where there is evidence of city life and other areas where all you can see is a beautiful SoCal canyon. Come by yourself and immerse yourself in a little nature therapy as you wander or bring the family along (including your dog who is welcome on this trail but must be kept on a leash) for some fresh air and sunshine. This little-known hike in San Diego may just be our favorite first hike of the year. Is it yours?
