The Can’t-Miss Northern California Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Tucked away in Humboldt Redwoods State Park is one of the best hikes for nature lovers of all ages — the Drury-Chaney Trail.

One of my favorite areas to visit in Northern California is Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This incredible destination is home to one of the largest areas of ancient redwoods in the world and is double the size of San Francisco. The size of this area, as well as the breathtaking redwoods that call it home, are worthy of a visit from any part of the state. While you can drive through the park, I prefer to explore on my own two feet and there's one can’t-miss trail in this park that I believe deserves a spot on every nature lover’s bucket list — the Drury-Chaney Trail.

No matter the length and difficulty of trail you are looking for, you’ll find it at Humboldt Redwoods State Park. While there are several hikes that I could recommend, an easy hike that is perfect for nature lovers of all ages is the Drury-Chaney Loop. Located at the northern end of the park, this hike takes you around old-growth redwood trees, next to thick greenery, and over bridges. It’s a lovely adventure.

And even better, this is a trail in Northern California that the entire family can enjoy. This journey features a lollipop-style trail, with a loop at the end of a short out-and-back path. The hike is just over two miles and is very easy. You can expect an easy-to-follow path, little elevation gain, and so many things to see and do that this hike will go by very quickly.

The Drury-Chaney Trail starts next to mile marker 43.9 on the Avenue of the Giants and near the small town of Pepperwood. As you hike, you’ll walk through a forest filled with large, magnificent redwood trees and you'll likely want to stop multiple times and look around. It’s inspiring as you look up at the trees towering above you and as you stand next to trees that have fallen near the path.

You’ll even want to pay close attention to the shrubs and greenery covering the forest floor. The flora and fauna in this forest certainly deserve your attention.

But it isn’t just the towering trees and the greenery that make this Northern California hike a must for every nature lover. You’ll also come across features such as massive tree stumps and even a long, picturesque footbridge. The Drury-Chaney Trail is a hike in Humboldt Redwoods State Park with so much to admire.

Despite being a state park, there is no entrance fee to enter Humboldt Redwoods State Park. However, it is important to stay on this trail as several hikers have reported spotting poisonous plants next to the path. You must also keep your favorite furry friend at home as dogs are not allowed on any trail within this California state park.

The Drury-Chaney Trail in Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a trail your entire family will love. With unique natural wonders, an easy path, and a short distance, it’s an afternoon adventure that I can’t recommend enough.
