Known for its unique volcanic landscape, Lassen Volcanic National Park offers a wealth of things to do outside in California, and is certainly a popular summer destination. However, it takes on an entirely different personality in the wintertime—transforming completely from rugged to serene—and it's definitely worth experiencing for yourself this season.
In fact, this beloved national park, best parks in California, hosts an array of winter activities for explorers who are up for braving the snow. Among them are the ranger-led snowshoe walks offered in the Southwest Area of the park from January through March each year.
These guided snowshoe hikes are the perfect way to explore Lassen in its winter form and they are open to hikers of all skill levels. At the beginning of each hike, park rangers will demonstrate how to put on the snowshoes along with basic snowshoeing techniques. The snowshoe are approximately two hours long and offered on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 9 am on the day of the hike.
The hike itself covers approximately 1-2 miles of terrain. It can get strenuous depending on current snow conditions, so keep that in mind. You won't be following an actual groomed trail, and instead you'll be led off-trail through the forests that surround the Visitor Center.
These guided hikes, which are among the best hiking trails in California, take place only on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Space in each hike is limited, so be sure to get there early on the day of to obtain your free ticket from the park's front desk. And don't forget to dress accordingly with good water-resistant hiking boots and lots of layers!
The ranger-led snowshoe hikes are unique and informative experiences, but they aren't the only way to enjoy Lassen and her stunning winter beauty. During the winter season, the park welcomes visitors to enjoy self-guided adventures and activities like sledding, skiing, and snowboarding. It’s important to note that except for the ranger-led activity, you cannot rent snowshoes or other winter equipment at the park.
