The Most Iconic View in Arkansas is also a Stunning Slice of History
Centerpoint Trail is one of the most iconic trails in Arkansas, and it's steeped in rich history. Discover more about the historic homestead along the trail.
When you set out on a hike, do you research the destination before you visit? Or do you ever log on to AllTrails to see what other folks have said about the trek? Well, if you were to look up Centerpoint Trail on AllTrails, you’d find that it’s one of the most iconic trails in Arkansas. Rightfully so, because when you’re standing 500 feet above the mighty Buffalo National River, those breathtaking vistas will leave you speechless.
While the trail itself is quite impressive, I especially love its historical significance. It was once the home of one of the most hardworking homesteaders in Arkansas ,and I am delighted to share this stunning slice of history with our beloved OIYS readers.
If you don’t know the name Eva Barnes Henderson, affectionately called “Granny Henderson,” then be prepared to be inspired. She is arguably the most famous homesteader in Arkansas, and she lived along the Buffalo River from the early to late 1900s before it was designated. This tough as nails pioneer, moved to the area when she married her husband Frank at the tender age of 16. The newlyweds built a quaint home on the 167-acre land, where they farmed and kept livestock.
Unfortunately, her husband passed away in 1959, but Granny remained on the land and was known to carry water multiple times per day from the Buffalo to maintain the farm. There was no running water, electricity, or any modern conveniences, but she remained steadfast and lived alone in the tiny cabin that was her home. Eventually, after spending a lifetime in the Ponca Wilderness, Granny was forced to sell her home in 1978 when the Buffalo National River received its designation. Fortunately, her cabin still remains a testament to her life as a strong and dedicated woman of yesteryear.
If you’ve trekked the 6-mile out-and-back Centerpoint Trail, you’ll know it leads to one of the most breathtaking views in Arkansas. However, you can also access Granny’s cabin along the way. The cabin is located near the river on a small walking path. The structure is still standing, but time has certainly taken its toll. After all, it’s been over 45 years since Granny left her beloved homestead. Unfortunately, after she moved out, she died shortly thereafter. I can only assume that her heart was broken, for her quaint home was the only life she knew. For those travelers who met Granny, they described her as the warmest and most kind-hearted woman. So, though she is no longer with us, her spirit and legacy will never be forgotten.
Before you set out to hike the Centerpoint Trail, please know that it’s not an easy trek. It’s very steep and rocky, there is a 1,000+ foot elevation gain, and it leads to high bluffs that are not for the faint of heart. So, we recommend leaving the kids and dogs at home. But the reward is worth it, as you’ll be witnessing one of the most spectacular views in Arkansas. Not to mention that you also get to visit the historic homestead and cabin where the iconic Granny Henderson lived. If you ask me, that’s a win-win!
