The Can’t-Miss Arkansas Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
Lace up your hiking boots and come with me to trek the Lake Alma Hiking Trail. This bucket list worthy trail in Arkansas has adventure waiting at every turn.
It’s no secret that Arkansas is brimming with nature. It’s one of my favorite things about the state. And nature lovers have no issue finding hidden gems around every corner. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, by now, you’ve probably hiked the Hawksbill Crag Trail or even the iconic Lost Valley Trail. After all, they are the most bucket list worthy trails in Arkansas. But I am here to tell you about another trail that you should add to your list. Featuring waterfalls, flowing creeks, towering bluffs, wildlife, and more, the Lake Alma Hiking Trail has all the right terrain to inspire your wanderlust. Lace up your hiking boots, download AllTrails+, and come with me on this outdoor adventure in Alma Arkansas.
As a small agricultural town in Arkansas, Alma is known for its claim of being the “Spinach Capital of the World.” So, it’s fitting that there is a bronze statue of Popeye holding a can of spinach in the town. While that could be a reason to visit the quaint community, another is to hike the scenic Lake Alma Hiking Trail.
At 5 miles long, there is a lot to see on this loop trail. Of course, the lake is one of the highlights, but you can also enjoy the forest, the creek crossings, the large boulders, and towering rock shelters. Bring the dog and kids as they will have a blast skipping across the rocks on the creek bed. You’ll probably enjoy it too; just be sure you’re wearing waterproof hiking boots.
One of the main attractions on the trail is the small waterfall. It’s nothing compared to Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls, but this pretty little cascade is nice to look at. I would recommend that you spend some time admiring its beauty. Plan your visit after a good rainfall so that you can see the waterfall in all its glory.
This hike is great any time of year. It’s especially pretty in the fall when the forest illuminates with the autumn colors. In the summer and springtime, expect to see plenty of wildflowers and wildlife as you explore. Keep your eyes peeled for rabbits, foxes, deer, and turtles, they’ll be out exploring too. During the winter, expect some frosty conditions. When it’s really cold in Arkansas, you might get lucky and see the frozen waterfall.
Of course, you can’t hike this trail without stopping by Lake Alma to enjoy a peaceful moment there. The 60-acre lake has an accessible fishing pier and it’s a popular spot for locals to hang out and spend the day.
The terrain on this trail is so dynamic that you’ll discover a surprise around every turn. What I like about this trail is that it’s located inside the Arkansas River Valley. While the terrain is not as vast as the Ozarks, it’s just as beautiful, so it’s one of the bucket list worthy trails in Arkansas.
Since the trail is located inside the Lake Alma Wildlife Observation Trail and Park, you’ll have access to more hiking trails, picnic tables, and the disc golf course. You can easily spend a day here enjoying the great outdoors. What more can a nature lover ask for?
If you have never hiked this scenic trail in Arkansas, now is your time to add it to your list. And while you’re in the area, you should explore the town of Alma. You might find some more hidden gems there too.
