This Canyon Hike Is One of Arizona’s Most Scenic Trails
If you're in search of a memorable canyon hike in Arizona, you'll love the Cathedral Wash Trail in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Are you looking for a beautiful, memorable, and challenging hike in Arizona? If so, we've found the perfect trail for you! This is an incredible and unforgettable hike. You'll be impressed by everything about it as it's one of those hikes that will, without a doubt, stay with you forever.
Without further ado, the Cathedral Wash Trail in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is calling your name! This 3.3-mile hike will take you through narrow slot canyons and along beautiful red rock formations all the way to the Colorado River. This is an out-and-back trail, so you'll have to go back the way you came to return to your car in the parking lot, but you'll love it every step of the way in both directions.
The Cathedral Wash Trail is very well-rated, and it's easy to see why. This is precisely the type of hike people come from around the world and the nation to experience in Arizona. There's only 380 feet of elevation gain on this hike, but don't let that fool you—this is not a standard or easy hike. You must be prepared to scramble and climb at specific points on the trail. At one point, there's even a 30-foot drop that you'll have to work your way down—and back up on the way back.
Still, this hike is very doable for most people. Take your time and look out for your companions. This hike is quite popular, so thousands of people have safely managed it before you, and you may be able to handle it, too.
There are several downclimbs along the route, but the 30-foot one mentioned above is the biggest among them. You'll find the rest relatively easy once you get past that one at the beginning. The 30-foot down climb can be managed by breaking it into several shorter, five-foot drops to the bottom, and you'll climb back up the same way on your return.
You'll follow the narrow canyon the rest of the way, and the route is relatively easy to follow. In places where you are unsure how to proceed, look for arrows or cairns to help guide you. It's well marked in areas that might seem confusing to some.
Along the way, you'll marvel at the beautiful rock formations above you. Be sure to bring plenty of water. You'll likely want to take many pictures on this hike, so be sure to bring your camera or ensure your phone is charged before you depart. Just remember that dogs are not allowed on this trail.
You can expect to see some wildlife along your route, too. Lizards scurry between the rocks and recharge in sunny pockets. Birds fly above the canyon. In the springtime, you may also see some wildflowers peeking out here and there.
Be sure to budget some time to relax at the end before heading back along the same route. This is a gorgeous section of the Colorado River, and it's the perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch.
You'll love everything about the Cathedral Wash Trail. It is undoubtedly one of the best hikes in Arizona—and that's saying a lot in a state full of fantastic hiking trails. Have fun and be safe! This is sure to be a hike that you'll never forget.
