This Is the Most Claustrophobic Hike in Arizona—Would You Try It?
Fat Man's Pass is a claustrophobic hike Arizona that involves a tight squeeze through a narrow rock passage. It's a little scary, but also a whole lot of fun.
When I was a toddler, my family and I got stuck in a tiny elevator at the top of the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio. It took several hours for the elevator to start working again, and by that time, I was traumatized. Today, I'm still claustrophobic (and deathly afraid of elevators) because of that experience. But the only way to get over a fear is to face it, and this claustrophobic hike Arizona is the perfect opportunity. Fat Man's Pass and Natural Tunnel via Mormon Trail in Phoenix's South Mountain Preserve is a popular, 3.5-mile loop with unique rock formations, scenic views, and an incredibly narrow passage that's more than a little nerve-wracking.
If you're ready to face your fears like I am (or if you aren't claustrophobic and just want a fun adventure to tell your friends about), add this trail to your bucket list. It's sure to become one of your favorite memories.
Your journey begins on the Mormon Trail. With an elevation gain of around 900 feet, the initial leg of the hike is steep and rocky, but the payoff is worth the effort. The first part of the trail is pretty standard desert scenery, with scrub brush and rugged cliffs lining either side of the path. But be patient, for the best is yet to come.
Eventually, you'll reach a fork in the path. Take a right onto the Hidden Valley Trail, as going left will require you to travel downhill over some very slippery rocks. This will lead you to a series of unique rock formations that make this hike famous. One of them is the ironically-named Fat Man's Pass, which is a very narrow rock passage that you have to turn sideways to fit through. (If you don't fit or you'd rather not go this way, you can climb over a nearby boulder and continue along the trail.) You'll also pass through the Natural Tunnel, which is a far less claustrophobic (but equally cool-looking) passage that feels like you're inside a cave.
After enduring Fat Man's Pass, the sweeping views from the highest point on the trail are a welcome reward. The entire city of Phoenix is spread out in front of you, and this is the perfect place to stop, enjoy a snack, and take it all in before you head back.
Make sure to get an early start and bring plenty of water if you're hiking Fat Man's Pass and Natural Tunnel via Mormon Trail in the summer, as temperatures quickly go from just plain hot to unbearable.

Have you ever gone through Fat Man's Pass? If so, what did you think of the tight squeeze? It's definitely a memorable adventure, and I think the unique rock formations make up for those few nail-biting moments. But if you prefer hikes that don't force you to face your fears, there are plenty of other great hiking trails in Arizona to choose from.
