Beat the Crowds at This Hidden Gem National Forest in Arizona

Escape to Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to explore crystal-clear lakes, tranquil streams, and picturesque mountain ranges. It's a true treasure in Arizona.

Did you know that Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest near Springerville sees over 500,000 visitors annually? While that number is staggering, it doesn’t compare to the millions exploring the popular national parks and forests in Arizona. Naturally, this makes this gorgeous national forest a true, low-key, hidden gem in the state. Of course, you can flock to Coconino National Forest to witness the largest sandstone arch in Sedona, but why not skip the crowds to explore the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest instead? After all, our underrated treasures in Arizona deserve attention, too! If you love nature as much as we do, make this hidden gem forest in Arizona your next escape.

Fun Fact: Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest is one of the best forests for fishing in the US. Can you believe that? So, this anglers’ paradise attracts visitors trying to reel in their next big catch. But if you don’t like fishing, have no worries; this hidden gem forest has plenty for you to do.

The expansive forest covers over two million acres of east-central Arizona, and it extends to our neighbors in New Mexico, too. Here, you’ll find a plethora of natural wonders and hidden gems, including over 30 crystal-clear lakes, tranquil streams, 1,000 miles of hiking trails, picturesque mountain ranges, the Mogollon Rim, and a gorgeous mix of pines, firs, and aspens.

Explorers of any age can find inspiration in the forest, which is great any time of the year. However, to avoid the crowds, I recommend you plan a trip during the weekdays or begin your hikes early in the morning.

Bring the kids along to trek the short and easy trails that could arguably be the best hikes in Arizona. They include Springs Trail, Thompson Trail, and the Ice Cave via Blue Ridge Cave Trail. Along these fairytale treks, there are hidden caves, rivers and streams, footbridges, and wildflowers in the spring, not to mention the picturesque scenic views. Another easy trail is Woodland Lake Trail; it's paved and great for folks of all abilities, as well as moms with strollers. Don’t leave Fido at home; they’re welcome on these trails and can even be off-leash in some sections. You might want to use AllTrails+ to keep up with the guidelines as you meander through the forest.

Avid hikers and backpackers, there are tons of adventures here for you! Grab your hiking boots and trekking poles to take on the Mount Baldy Wilderness trails. The three main trails are over 10 miles long, so you’ll need to plan ahead for these treks. No matter the season you visit, these trails are beautiful. They transform into winter wonderlands in the colder months, and in the spring and summer, the streams are flowing, and wildflowers are blooming. Of course, fall is glowing with autumnal beauty.

A quick note: Mount Baldy Peak, aka the White Mountains, is managed by the Mountain Apache Reservation and considered sacred ground. Permission might be needed to explore certain sections, so be mindful as you trek. I recommend you visit the USDA Forest website to learn more.

Want more adventure? Skiers can hit the slopes at Sunrise Park Resort (the slopes are inside the forest), and history buffs will love the Fort Apache Historic Park. If you’re in search of the most expansive views of the mountains, grab the best seat in the house at the Mogollon Rim. In addition to all the stunning landscapes, there are several recreational areas for swimming, picnics, fishing, camping, and more. General admission to the forest is free, but there is a small fee for using the recreational spaces.

Explorers can trek the trails or traverse them on horseback, but best of all, you can also cruise the 43-mile-long Mogollon Rim Road Scenic Drive for a tranquil drive through the forest. No matter what adventure you’re seeking, chances are you can find it here at this hidden gem forest in Arizona. If you plan your trip during the weekdays or off-season, you might just have the trails all to yourself.
