This Secret Alaska Waterfall Most People Haven’t Heard Of Is An Absolute Gem

Alaska has countless bodies of water, including lakes, rivers, and streams. Out of all this beauty comes some pretty spectacular waterfalls. There are some famous ones, including Nugget Falls in Juneau, and Horsetail Falls outside of Valdez. But there's something pretty special about hiking a lesser known trail and coming across a secret Alaska waterfall!

There's a little known trail only a 20 minute drive outside of Alaska's largest city.

The South Fork Falls Trail in Eagle River is a secret little spot that many don't know about. Even though Anchorage is so close, you won't see too many people on this trail when you head out!

These falls are 60 feet of cascading beauty.

At a mild elevation of 500 feet, the trail to get to the South Fork Falls is easy and very accessible. It's a straightforward .7 mile loop from start to finish.

The trail is mostly flat, with little elevation gain.

It's well maintained all year round, although ice cleats are recommended in the winter, just in case. Many say it's more of a walk than a hike.

Right before the bridge is a smaller, less trafficked trail.

This trail will take you to the base of the waterfall. It's a wonderful spot to get closer to the falls, but practice safety!

Most waterfalls aren't much to see during the winter.

This beauty keeps her looks all year long! The stunning ice only enhances the fall's beauty when the temperature dips!

There's a very good chance you'll see wildlife on your hike!

Many moose and calves have been spotted alongside the trail. There are lots of bears in the area too, so stay aware!

You can hike this gorgeous trail 365 days a year.

This trail's parking lot is located at the end of Ken Logan Circle. There is a sign saying "Private Property," but the owner is okay with us parking and hiking, as long as we are all respectful!
