Hyder, Alaska is a picturesque small town with many beautiful attractions.
One big draw is the United States access road to see Salmon Glacier! There is an access road that connects Hyder, Alaska to Stewart, British Colombia.
Salmon Glacier lies around 20 miles outside of Hyder.
It can be accessed from Hyder from early July through late September, depending on snowfall. It is the fifth largest glacier in Canada, and the road to it offers spectacular views.
This road is called Granduc Mine Road, and it leads to the copper mining site that bears the same name and overlooks this glacier!
The road is gravel, with many potholes and very bumpy and rutted. Make sure to take your time traveling this road, and be sure to fill up with plenty of gas!
The road has no guide rails, mile markers, or sign posts.
Traveling carefully and slow, and the trip can be made in an hour! You're bound to see plenty of wildlife on your drive, including blacks bears and marmots!
You'll find breathing vistas around every turn on this rough road.
You'll love the peekaboo views of the glacier, along with meadows and other spectacular mountains that reside in the Boundary Range. If you head out in autumn you'll also be greeted with beautiful, bright colors of all the leaves changing!
The best views are on a cliff overlooking the glacier.
There's a nice large pullout for you to park in, along with benches to sit and take in all of the natural wonder around you. Bring a picnic and stay for awhile if the weather is nice!
