The Talkeetna Mountains are absolutely beautiful, and accessible to many Alaskans who live in the Southcentral part of the state. The lake was left behind after the withdrawal of the Gold Mint Glacier from the top of the peak, and the resulting aquamarine color is out of this world. An adventure to Moonstone Lake takes all day, so plan an adventure weekend and bring your camping gear. Take the Parks Highway to the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and head onto the Palmer-Fishhook Road, also called Hatcher Pass Road.
The Talkeetna Mountains are one of Alaska's most beautiful and accessible ranges, near the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Watch the sunrise as you leave civilization and cruise towards the unspoiled wilderness.
At 11 mile lies the Government Peak Campground, a 10 site location perfect for hikers. You can set up camp so everything is ready for your return and cruise a few miles more down the road to the trailhead.
The Little Susitna River follows Hatcher Pass Road and the trail. Take a moment to stop by this joyful little river any time you need a break along the journey.
This area is well trafficked all times of the year. In the summer and fall, hiking is the popular way to explore. Winter options include skiing, snow machine and snowshoeing the trial. Some even paraglide off these staggering mountains.
The Gold Mint Trail is 13 miles one way, but is relatively easy. The first few miles are well groomed and easy for a stroller or wheelchair. The last 1/8 mile is rocky as you head up to the glacier rimmed peak.
The weather can change quickly in these mountains. Make sure you check the forecast and prepare for rain or snow and cold winds any time of year. With proper planning and gear, the trip should be no problem.
