Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Alabama That’s Perfect for Summer

Follow This Lakeside Trail in Alabama That Ends in a Refreshing Swim at a Sandy Beach

One of my favorite ways to hike, especially in the summer, is when there is a water feature to cool off. Whether it's a waterfall hike, a lakeside gem, or a beachfront trek, waterfront hiking trails in Alabama are my favorite way to stay cool and still get outside and explore. An incredible hiking trail to add to your summer to-do list is nestled away on the sparkling shores of Lake Martin. Wind Creek State Park offers one of the most refreshing summer getaways in the state, especially for those looking to pair a scenic walk with a dip in the water.

The Wind Creek Yellow Trail Loop is a moderately challenging two-mile loop that winds through a forest of pine and hardwood, offering a peaceful and moderately easy trek with frequent glimpses of the lake. The trailhead is located near the northern end of the park, and it's well-marked and maintained—great for families, casual hikers, or anyone who wants a relaxed stroll in nature. You’ll pass campsites, shady picnic areas, and benches where you can pause and take in the tranquil views of Lake Martin.

What makes this hike extra special in the warmer months is what awaits at the end, or whenever you're ready for a break. Wind Creek’s public swimming area, located near the marina and day-use zone, features a roped-off swimming beach with soft sand underfoot and calm, clear lake water that’s just the right temperature for cooling off on a hot day.

The park itself is one of the largest state-owned campgrounds in the United States, with over 1,400 acres to explore and more than 28 miles of shoreline. Amenities include restrooms and changing areas near the swim beach, paddleboard and kayak rentals, and shaded picnic spots that make it easy to stretch your visit into a full-day outing. There’s even a camp store nearby in case you forget sunscreen or want a cold treat after your hike.

For those who want to keep the adventure going, Wind Creek also offers longer hikes and additional trails like the Alabama Reunion Trail and the Horse Trail, as well as access to boat rentals and fishing piers. But for simplicity and summer fun, the loop trail-to-swim combo is hard to beat.

If you’re looking for beach hiking trails Alabama adventurers swear by, Wind Creek State Park deserves a top spot on your list. It’s the kind of place where you can hike under a canopy of trees, hear the rustle of leaves and lake breezes, and end your outing floating blissfully in cool, clear water. Summer doesn’t get much better than that.
