In a state that is well-known for delicious pie — we do have a pie trail, after all — it isn't easy to stand out in the crowd when it comes to this decadent dessert. But, as it turns out, Montana's best pie might be found in the small town of Three Forks. At the Iron Horse Cafe & Pie Shop, you can enjoy a hearty meal, a hot cup of coffee, and a perfect slice of pie, or you can take a whole pie to-go if you'd rather. It's the perfect way to reward yourself for a sweet little road trip.
Three Forks is located in Gallatin County, about 30 minutes from Bozeman.
It's home to less than 2,000 Montanans, and it's a small city in every sense of the word. But there are definitely a few attractions that make it well worth the drive.
When you go, you'll definitely want to spend some time at Missouri Headwaters State Park.
This is where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers come together. It's also one of the places explores by the Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1805.
When hunger strikes, head to the Iron Horse Cafe & Pie Shop, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
It's located right on Main Street, so it's easy to find.
The cafe is known for made-from-scratch soups, hearty sandwiches, burger lunches, and decadent steak dinners.
It has also won numerous local awards, including that of "Best Kept Secret."
But, while you might come for a sandwich at lunch or a steak dinner, you'll stay for the pie.
The freshly baked pies are heavenly, and you'll find a rotating list of flavors available every day.
The pies are all baked by the wonderful Three Forks Pie Lady.
The Three Forks Pie Lady, also known as Jamie Taylor, really knows her stuff. She takes custom orders (with plenty of notice), but honestly, her pie flavors never disappoint.
The Iron Horse Cafe & Pie shop is a road trip destination on its own.
Stop by, have some pie, explore Three Forks, and then come back for dinner and dessert. No one will judge you.
