It's nearly impossible to choose a favorite season in Montana, but summer is high on the list. Lakes and rivers let us cool down, while hiking trails through the forest offer the perfect amount of shade. Summer is all about taking our time, enjoying a meal outside, and long drives with the windows down. It's for taking in the breeze that reminds us why it's so great to be in Big Sky Country when the weather gets warmer. One other benefit of enjoying summer here is the wildflowers that can be found in every corner of the state. Wildflowers in Montana can be found everywhere, but there's one simple trail that offers some of the most beautiful.
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park in Whitehall is about 3,000 acres. The park offers visitors the chance to explore about ten miles of trails for hiking as well as the limestone caverns the park is named after. There's also a campground.
Any of the trails are great for exploring the area and taking in the views, but there's one in particular that's perfect for summer.
The Greer Gulch Loop Trail is 2 miles and typically takes just over an hour to complete. Visitors say it's well-maintained.
The trail follows a creek to start. It then heads uphill, but after about a mile the route is primarily downhill. The forest views are pretty, but it's the wildflowers that really steal the show here in the summer.
In June, you'll find wildflowers along both sides of the trail.
If you time your visit just right, you'll have the opportunity to see every color of the rainbow.
Look closely and you might see species like Fireweed, Common Yarrow, Glacier Lily, and Arrowleaf Balsamroot.
Have you explored the Greer Gulch Loop Trail? If you've visited and found wildflowers, we'd love to know when you were there and what you saw. Let us know in the comments!
The Greer Gulch Loop Trail is located within Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and can be visited any time of year. The route is considered moderately challenging, making it best for people who have some hiking experience. You can learn more about Greer Gulch Loop Trail on the AllTrails website. To plan your visit, be sure to visit the Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park section of the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website.
Before heading out on any hike, always be sure to tell someone where you're going and when you plan to return. And always make sure you have the right gear. I always like to bring layers along just in case the weather changes unexpectedly.
After enjoying some of the most lovely wildflowers in Montana, consider checking out a few other trails that feature flowers and waterfalls.
