If you are looking for a family-owned restaurant in Montana, you're in luck. There are some really amazing eateries all across Montana that fit the bill. If you're in the Missoula area, however, you must stop by Double Front Cafe, which is one of the oldest family-owned restaurants in the state. Not only is it historic, the food - especially the fried chicken - is absolutely delicious. So check it out today.
Double Front was built in 1909, and as its name implies, it had two front doors: one at 122 W. Alder Street, and the other at 121 W. Railroad Street.
Up until 1933, the building was used as a bar, pool hall, and cigar shop.
In 1933, the Mangan family took ownership of the building, creating a cafe and bar. This also marked the beginning of Double Front serving its legendary fried chicken.
Over the years, the Double Front saw various owners, but it was in 1961 when the Herndon family bought the cafe.
They remain owners to this day and continue to serve the best chicken - always cooked to order and never frozen.
Because Double Front provides only fresh, never frozen, hand-battered chicken, they have a 30-minute preparation time.
Their motto is: "The Best Takes a Little Longer." We agree.
The fried chicken is the centerpiece of this menu, but boy oh boy, the coleslaw is pretty darn amazing as well. Be sure to try some when you visit.
The dining room at this family-owned restaurant in Montana is cozy and warm.
There are 13 tables, and for those in the mood for something other than fried chicken, they also serve dinner salads, burgers, and more. So give it a try!
