Glacier National Park is Montana's crown jewel. We're lucky to have it in our backyard, and it's a place every Montanan should visit (hopefully numerous times). That being said, if you're not used to hiking long distances or spending long days in the great outdoors, the idea of hiking at Glacier may be a bit daunting. Luckily, there are plenty of short-and-sweet nature trails in the park that hikers of all skill levels can enjoy. Trail of the Cedars is especially delightful.
You'll find the Trail of the Cedars about five miles east of the Lake McDonald Lodge.
The trail both starts and ends at Going-to-the-Sun Road, and it's easy to find.
The trail is only about a mile long, and it's a nice, easy loop around some stunning scenery.
This is one of only two trails at Glacier National Park that is wheelchair accessible.
Most begin their hike on the eastern side of the loop, which travels along a boardwalk and passes through a forest of ancient western red cedars and western hemlocks.
At the halfway point, you'll find a footbridge over Avalanche Creek that provides great views of the Avalanche Gorge.
If you'd like, you can explore part of the Avalanche Lake Trail, which runs parallel to Trail of the Cedars.
With the two trails being so close, you won't even have to add any length to your hike.
The second half of this loop hike is paved, so it really is a nice, easy path.
This just proves that you don't have to choose one of Glacier's toughest trails to see the gorgeous scenery the park is known for.
As you can imagine, this trail stays pretty busy in the summertime.
If you can't go during the off season, try to start early in the day (and on a week-day) if you don't want to share the experience with many others.
Have you ever explored this beautiful trail?
