Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield in Republic played a significant role in the Civil War as the site of the war’s second major battle and the first west of the Mississippi.
The Union Army attacked the Confederate Army on August 10, 1861, resulting in their loss and the death of their leader, Nathaniel Lyon. His death would mark the first of a Union General during the war.
Today, history buffs make the pilgrimage to Wilson’s Creek Battlefield to explore the site of the historic battle. There is both a paved road tour and a handful of hiking trails that make it easy to check out the grounds.
The grounds on which the battlefield sits is also home to a Civil War Research Library.
