Missourians naturally gravitate to the water, spending summers floating, swimming, and boating. It’s easy to do, too, because the state is home to more than 350 lakes and rivers. A day on or in the water is pure bliss for many of us, but it doesn’t come without its risks. This popular Missouri lake draws countless visitors. However, it’s also known as one of the most dangerous lakes in the United States, making it essential for you to take precautions when you visit.
Tallying more than 50,000 acres, Lake of the Ozarks beckons fans of the water with its vast space to explore and, on those hot summer days, to go swimming.
Lake of the Ozarks State Park boasts two sandy beaches – Beach 1 and Beach 2 – nestled along one of Missouri’s largest lakes, making it easy for visitors to access. Neither beach has a lifeguard.
However, this popular lake in Missouri is hiding a dark secret. It’s one of the most dangerous lakes in the United States, claiming the lives of, on average, more than a dozen visitors a year.
Unlike a swimming pool, the lake features quite a few obstacles, many that you may never see, including currents and considerable traffic from boats. The lake is also home to trees, rocks, and other objects you can’t see from the surface.
That makes diving into the water extremely dangerous, putting you at risk of injury or death.
The best way to have fun and to stay safe is to wear a lifejacket whether you’re boating, swimming, or even fishing, and be aware of the signs of drowning – bobbing up and down, an open mouth, and gasping for air.
Visit the Lake of the Ozarks State Park website for more information.
