No matter your interest, there’s sure to be something that appeals to you at the Marshall County Historical Museum. On the outside, it looks like any other museum. The same can’t be said for the inside, though. In fact, most visitors say it’s "more like an eccentric grandmother’s attic than a museum" – and that’s because it’s full of fascinating oddities, artifacts, and more.
A must-visit in Holly Springs, the Marshall County Historical Museum is billed as “one of the most interesting and unusual destinations the city has to offer.”
Living up to its reputation, the museum’s got some unique features – from its location in a former dormitory from the 1900s to its hodge podge of contents.
The first few exhibits showcase an array of Civil War relics. With more than 40,000 pieces, it’s the state’s biggest collection of Civil War memorabilia.
Once you make your way past the initial exhibits and delve further into the museum, its true quirkiness comes to light.
Like a weird wonderland, it features room after room filled with oddities and artifacts.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the museum’s collection. It truly includes a little bit of everything.
In one room, you’ll find taxidermy of local wildlife, and in the next, fashions from throughout the decades.
Dollhouses, Victorian children’s books, sports memorabilia, and Elvis records are just a few of the other items on display in the museum.
The playful randomness of the museum’s contents makes complete sense when you learn that each and every item was donated by local residents.
It also makes the collection that much more impressive!
Ready to check out this quirky museum? Keep in mind that, with three floors and dozens of rooms, exploring it takes a while, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time to see all it has to offer.
