Fall is amazing in Minnesota, and the charming town of Grand Rapids is located at a point where our state’s two major forest biomes meet. That means you get the big, bold maples and oaks pf the Big Woods forest along with the golden aspens and birches of the North Woods. On top of this, Grand Rapids is a pretty delightful destination unto itself, so it really is a perfect place for a fall day trip in Minnesota.

You'll find Grand Rapids on U.S. Route 2, about halfway between Duluth and Bemidji, but a little closer to the latter.

It's a town of around 10,000 on the Mississippi River and the seat of Itasca County.

It's surrounded by state and national forest on all sides, as well as many pristine lakes.
Getting out on the water is a great way to enjoy the fall colors in the Grand Rapids Area.

In fact, the ​​Mesabi Trail, one of the state's longest, paved multipurpose trails, runs right into town.

Another great place to experience fall in Grand Rapids is at the Forest History Center, which is part arboretum, part nature center, and part museum.

​​You can even take a fall paddle on the Mississippi at the center.
Just outside of town, you can bathe in a sea of fall foliage in the Chippewa National Forest.

Grand Rapids is one of the forest's gateway communities, and it's also a terminus of the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway, which curves through the forest.

Personally, I enjoy Grand Rapids any time of year, but with its North Woods setting on the Mississippi River, it’s hard to beat fall. While it’s great for a day trip, there really is a ton to do in the town, as well as the surrounding area. I recommend staying a couple days and turning your day trip into a weekend adventure.
