As outdoor tourism increases in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there are fewer and fewer nature spots and small towns in Minnesota that aren’t awash in people looking for that perfect Instagram post. But I came across a spot a few years ago that was an incredibly pleasant surprise, and I think it’s a place that not too many folks know about. The Mickey Elverum Bog Walk in Orr is one of my favorite hidden gems in Minnesota, and you should really consider putting on your must-visit list.

Although Orr is a gateway to Voyageurs National Park, I think it’s a worthy destination in its own right: There aren’t too many places where you can walk through a bog and then watch wild black bears gather for a meal. If you’re visiting the area in the summer, though, be sure to bring plenty of insect repellant – they do get thick up here.

Hidden Gems In Minnesota

Are there other natural hidden gems in Minnesota like the Mickey Elverum Bogwalk?
Fortunately for nature lovers in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there are many hidden gems in Minnesota that, like the Mickey Elverum Bogwalk, are off the beaten path. These are a few of our favorite examples of hidden gems in Minnesota.

  • Reno Management Unit of the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest, Brownsville - The Reno Management Unit of the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest is located in Minnesota's stunning Bluff Country, along the Mississippi River in the southeastern part of the state.
  • Vermilion Gorge Trail, Crane Lake - Not far from Orr, about half an hour northeast of the town, closer to Crane Lake, you'll find Vermilion Gorge and its namesake trail. This short hike is so far off the beaten path in the Superior National Forest that you're likely to have to to yourself, which is wonderful. You'll traverse a rocky gorge along the Vermilion River, and the rewards for your efforts is a gorgeous (pardon the pun) little waterfall.
  • Onion River Trail, Tofte - Another short trail with a wonderful waterfall - one of my favorite cascades, in Minnesota, as a matter of fact - can be accessed from the Ray Berglund State Wayside between Tofte and Lutsen along the North Shore of Lake Superior. The Onion River Trail is a short trek up the Onion River gorge offers lovely views of the multi-tiered cascade formed by the river as it tumbles on down to the big lake.
  • Morton Outcrops Scientific and Natural Area, Morton - Morton Outcrops SNA is an off-the-beaten path site in southwest Minnesota that will wow lovers of history and geology, alike. At this SNA, you'll find some of the oldest rocks on the planet - were talking, billions of years, here - and they're right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
