When you think about visiting a garden you think of fresh blooming flowers and lots of warm sunshine, but some of the gardens in Michigan offer year-round activities and interesting exhibits. Here are a few winter gardens in Michigan you can plan to visit even when the snow flies:

  • Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, MI: This award-winning botanical garden and sculpture park has 158 acres to explore and greenhouses to wander - even in the wintertime. The wooden bridge that crosses a pond to a wooden panda is especially picturesque during a light snowfall. You can also enjoy the annual Metro Health Christmas and Holiday Traditions exhibit each January. Or, the Winter Family Day that rolls around in February is a nice reason to take a nature walk with the family.
  • Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Detroit, MI: This wonderful spot in Detroit's Belle Isle is the oldest continuously running conservatory in the US. It opened in 1904 and has been warming plants and our hearts ever since. There are five separate sections to the indoor gardens covered by an iconic glass dome. Take a trip to the tropics, the desert, a palm tree forest, and more while staying toasty warm indoors.
