Elmwood Cemetery is located at 1200 Elmwood St in Detroit.
Dedicated in 1846, Elmwood has earned the title of Michigan’s oldest continuously operating nondenominational cemetery. With this history comes plenty of ghost stories and an eerie vibe.
The non-denominational cemetery serves as a final resting place for all sorts of notable and famous Michigan residents, from governors to musicians to war heroes.
For those who don’t believe in the supernatural, Elmwood offers a peaceful and scenic spot to stroll. In fact, it even features a lovely stream and plenty of gentle rolling hills.
If you’re a believer in ghostly tales, though, you might just pick up on a few spirits here. In fact, many Michiganders report having spotted orbs and flashes of light throughout.
The variety of mausoleums throughout the cemetery only add to its haunting vibe. After all, there’s no telling what might lurk within or behind one of these structures.
As if that weren’t enough, Elmwood Cemetery was built near the site of a bloody battle between British troops and Native American leader Chief Pontiac - talk about chilling.
Whether you’re strolling through to appreciate the historical elements of the cemetery or hunting for ghosts, one thing is for sure: a visit this locale is tough to forget.
