We look forward to Memorial Day Weekend as the unofficial start of summer. It's really a great introduction to the new season, with its (almost) idyllic weather and three days off from work or school. Here in Michigan, there's plenty to do, so we put together an itinerary to help get you started.
1) First thing you'll want to do is do some shopping... To find that perfect cut of meat for the grill.
2) The Village Butcher Shop, Milford...
3) Or at Sparrow Market in Ann Arbor.
4) And some fresh produce
...like this guy at Eastern Market
5) Something you can easily toss into a picnic basket, like these farm fresh peaches at Eastern Market
6) Manistique Farmers Market
7) If you're planning to spend the day outside, like here on Platte River
8) Make sure to stock up on plenty of sunscreen...
9) But just to be safe, you might want to bring layers in case the forecast suddenly changes
10) Once you're all packed and ready to go, it's time to search for the ideal place to spend your day...
... You're hoping to find someplace spacious, like this empty shelter on Belle Isle.
11) But you're more likely to have to share space with a few others.
12) Maybe instead you're feeling like a parade or a festival is in order. If so, there are plenty of Memorial Day parades all over the state...
... Like the Mackinaw Memorial Parade and Fort Michilimackinac Pageant
13) The Dearborn Memorial Day Parade...
14) The Frankenmuth Bark, Bike & Balloons Fireworks...
15) The Beer & Brat Festival
...Which takes place Saturday, May 24th at Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa near Traverse City
16) The Lexington Memorial Day Parade
17) Or maybe your idea of fun is running a marathon?
18) Perhaps the crowds aren't your thing and you'd rather let the day pass you by on the water...
Like boating on Lake St. Clair...
19) Or Higgins Lake
20) And sometimes rest is the best way to spend the long weekend...
... Like on a hammock, by the lake in Rogers City.
