If you’re a lifelong Michigander, you might think you’ve seen all our beloved state has to offer. From beautiful beaches to hiking trails to unique eateries and museums galore, there’s plenty to appreciate – but one spectacular park in the Great Lakes State has likely flown under your radar. If you’re a fan of all things creative, make your way to Onaway for an unforgettable family excursion.
Awakon Park is located off Washington Street in the town of Onaway.
This one-of-a-kind destination features a variety of iron sculptures that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. It’s easy to be impressed by the public art you find here.
These towering creations are crafted by Moran Iron Works, a local fixture that has been in operation since the late 1970s. Awakon Park showcases the company’s creative side.
The park itself is situated among the ruins of a defunct steering wheel factory, which only adds to its quirky appeal. As you make your way through, you’ll surely want to snap a few photos.
Informational markers are placed throughout the park, so you’ll have a chance to learn more about each piece as you peruse. No matter what your age, you’ll find yourself enchanted.
Stroll along a loop trail that offers up-close access to a variety of sculptures, including an homage to the Statue of Liberty, a bust of Abraham Lincoln, and a massive steering wheel.
If you want to continue the outdoor exploration, make your way to Onaway’s Chandler Park, which connects to Awakon Park. There’s a delightful sense of small-town quirkiness here.
When you’re finished exploring this unforgettable area, you might just feel inspired to create. After all, Awakon Park and its towering pieces are sure to fuel the imagination.
